How much methane does your landfill waste each year

You can contact your landfill or the EPA to find out if your commuity should be doing something more than monitoring methane emissions.

The video on this page is from a recreational area that still produces energy long after the landfill was closed. "Methane Mountains" should be a community standard!

395 landfill methane projects generate about 9 billion kWhs annually

What makes more sense than to use the power sitting right next door? As of December 2005, 395 communities are tapping into the power of their trash. Another 600 projects are in one stage of development or the other.

It's a start, but not particularily impressive. Every community in America operates some form of landfill. Every landfill produces methane. Moreover landfill gas is essentially methane, which is a powerful greenhouse gas about 22 times more harmful than carbon dioxide.

These emissions are now regulated under the Clean Air Act as a result of the landfill New Source Performance Standards. Right now the emissions are regulated but there is no requirement to do anything productive with them. So we're two steps forward, one step back.
