Florida has minor oil and gas reserves but few other energy resources. However, geologists believe that large deposits of oil and gas may be found in the federally administered Outer Continental Shelf (OCS) off Florida's western coast. Florida's total energy consumption is among the highest in the country. However, due to relatively low energy use by the industrial sector, per capita energy consumption is among the lowest in the country. Florida's transportation and residential sectors lead State energy demand.

Florida Innovation
Geothermal 8/21/2008Bernie Karl of Alaska (Chena Power) is teaming with United Technologies Corp. and Quantum Oil and Gas to match a DOE grant in an innovative twist on geothermal technology. Their plan is to generate electricity from hot water drawn up through wells at a Florida oil field. If successful this would be the first ever power plant making electricity off an oil field. Electricity generated by this hot water would be clean power that could be fed into the grid or, in more remote areas, used in lieu of diesel to power the oil rigs themselves. On-the-ground work could start in early 2009. Read more: Fairbanks Daily News-Miner
Florida Facts
- Florida's per capita residential electricity demand is among the highest in the country, due in part to high air-conditioning use during hot summer months and the widespread use of electricity for home heating during winter months.
- Geologists believe that there may be large oil and gas deposits off Florida's western coast in the Federal Outer Continental Shelf.
- Florida is a leading producer of oranges and researchers are attempting to derive ethanol from citrus peel waste.
- More petroleum-fired electricity, in absolute terms, is generated in Florida than in any other State.
- Hurricanes and severe storms from the Atlantic Ocean put Florida at risk for massive power outages during the storm season.
